In 1776 the Gundalow BOSTON actively thwarted British General Sir Guy Carleton on Lake Champlain, thus preventing the division of our thirteen colonies,
and WHEREAS,
From 1777 to 1780 the Frigate BOSTON contributed to the capture of 21 British ships,
and WHEREAS,
From 1799 to 1814 the Frigate BOSTON defended America against foes on the seas,
and WHEREAS,
From 1826 to 1846 the Sloop-of-War BOSTON continued this defense of America,
and WHEREAS,
From 1884 to 1940 the Protected Cruiser BOSTON continued to carry the U.S. and Boston flags to all corners of the globe,
and WHEREAS,
From 1943 to 1946 the Cruiser USS BOSTON CA69 earned ten battle stars in the Pacific Theater of WW II, never losing a man to enemy action,
And WHEREAS,
From 1955 to 1970 the World’s First Guided Missile Cruiser USS BOSTON CAG1 earned five more battle stars while exercising the technological and military strength of America from Beirut Lebanon to Vietnam,
And WHEREAS,
from 1979 to 1999 the USS BOSTON SSN703 extended America’s military might to regions deep below the surface of the world’s oceans while earning significant recognition for crew excellence and determination,
I, Thomas Menino, Mayor of these vessel’s proud namesake city, do hereby declare FRIDAY, JULY 20, 2001 to be USS BOSTON Day in recognition of the service these crews have provided to Boston, to Massachusetts, and to America for two hundred and twenty five years.
